"Such Devoted Sisters"
Synopsis: The old Bible story of Jacob finding a wife.. or two (Genesis: 29 KJV)
Time: Approx. 10 minutes
At Rise: Laban and Jacob are in discussion, Rachel and Leah are eavesdropping, behind tree
Laban: Ah Jacob. my own sister's son, come from the old country, such a small world. You have worked out well these past seven years. I have been very pleased. If there's anything you want my boy, just let me know.
Jacob: Well Uncle Laban, as a matter of fact, I fulfilled the custom, the seven years are up and I want the marriage ceremony to take place. I am eager to settle down with my new wife. You're beautiful daughter Rachel.
Laban: Oh? The seven years up already? How the time it goes flying by. (frowns) Rachel huh?
Jacob: Yes the years have flown by, it was nothing to me. The work was like play, since I knew what my reward would be. Uncle Laban, please arrange the ceremony to take place tonight. (walks off whistling)
Laban: Oy Vay! What to do about Leah, my first born. (He exits)
(The two sisters step out from tree to argue, Leah should keep her back to the audience somewhat)
Leah: I'm telling you, I haven't been this excited since that time Daddy gave that big feast for..
Rachel: (interrupting dreamily) Oh he's such a catch. So young, so handsome, so strong, so.....
Leah: (interrupts her with a bossy voice) Mine! So quit your dreaming little sister!
Rachel: But we heard him asking permission to marry me, I'm the one he wants.
Leah: (laughs) Ha! Sure, except for one tiny, little, itty bitty fact. You know Father would never marry you off before me. I am the elder daughter, I will marry first. That is our tradition.
Rachel: But Leah, I'm sure Jacob may like you..but I know it's me he loves.
Leah: Like is good. Like can turn into love. Besides, why would he choose you over me? Look at you, as skinny as a rail, men don't like skinny girls, like you.
Rachel: Well at least the ground doesn't shake when I walk across the room.
Leah: Oh no you just float across a room on those angel wings of yours. Not!
Rachel: Besides you're so. bossy. Men don't like bossy women.
Leah: Just because I speak my mind. Sometimes men have to be given a little nudge in the right direction.
Rachel: A little nudge is good, but you.... I remember poor Obed, our neighbor, we thought for sure he was set to ask for your hand, but you had to go and nag, nag, nag until he ran away and joined a caravan that was passing through....and then there was Goraz ....
